Recipes as Art

Posted in Crafting, in the kitchen by Allie on February 27, 2011

Samson’s Auntie Joshna is an accomplished chef (published!) and activist who champions seasonal, local food that is wholesome and delicious. I am constantly using her as a resource for my cooking and baking, and she’s given me several great recipes that my family loves. One that I keep returning to is her Apple, Blueberry, Almond Spelt Cake (only I omit the almonds, ‘cause I’m allergic) which is hearty, rich and delicious. It’s also a great way to use up those blueberries everyone keeps sticking us with because I mentioned one time my kid loves them*.

It also happens to be, Joshna tells me, the first recipe she developed on her own, from scratch.

This made it the perfect recipe to turn into a housewarming gift when we went to break in her new kitchen with February’s Marshmallow-a-Month (more on that later). The idea of recipes as art is not new, and I’m thinking this would be a great way to keep handy those recipes you use all the time but just can’t seem to commit to memory. I designed this one in Photoshop, printed on cardstock, and framed in an Ikea frame. Start to finish it took me about an hour. . .

* Which, of course, will cause Auntie Joshna to roll her eyes because those winter plastic-packaged blueberries drive her crazy because the story of the winter garden does not include blueberries, but I guess this cake is better than letting the blueberries rot, right?
